what's the difference?

What is the difference between the 840 and the 880's and the expanded versions? And is there a big difference (besides the tracks) from the 880's to the 16 track models? The reason I am asking is it seems to me it would be more cost effective to get 2 used 8 series, rather than one 16 series.
