The Case of the Distorted Vocal Spike
After spending a few isolated mixing sessions concentrating on some "harsh" vocals, what i found was that the distortion was not what i thought.
after numerous eq settings etc...high Q values (narrow freq reject).. chopping mids, and highs, .......nothing worked. becoming frustrated, i turned everything to back to zero, flat, nothing zone and started over.. the distorted "s's" "pop's" turned out to be the poor compressor (x4) settings! of course this problem was pronounced and exaggerated by using my JBLControl5 monitors that have more of the mid freq's .... didn't hear the distortion hardly at all on my BW303 monitors, only on other systems...proving the scooped mid freq's speakers isn't the way to go for studio monitor. monitors... ah, if only to have a pair that can provide more details in the bass region, now. not volume, but details... starting to "get" what these Sound Engineers expect from monitors. the fun in learning by "trial and error". ![]()
