help with US-122

i need help. i just installed a tascam us-122. two questions. how do i monitor BOTH the recording AND the playback at one time? seems my computer plays the playback but the inputs can only be heard by the direct monitoring on the interface itself. SECOND- why does it ONLY record in mono? i am using cooledit pro 2.1. thanks for your help

did that thing come with cubase LE?
i know how it works with cubase but i am un-familar with cool edit.
If you want stereo..you must use both inputs on the us-122 and select A and B stereo as your input

You need to set up the US-122 as both the INPUT and OUTPUT device. It sounds like your computer's soundcard is still selected as the output. I don't know how to change this in CEP, though.

i will try to change the output to the US-122 . Yes it also came with Cubase LE but that seemed to be aimed more at midi and loop production. i am doing acoustic/vocal demos and like the simple interface of cooledit. anymore advice would be welcome.

As for making it recorder in stereo, i am still kinda puzzled. there is no stereo switch on the interface. there is a mono switch which lets you hear stereo in the headphones when monitoring directly. i want to figure out how to make a track record on both the left and right channel. if i run a cable from the L and R outputs into my mic input on the soundcard it would probably work, but then that negates the use of my new $200 dollar "paperweight" thank you very much for any help you may give me.

I think you have been mis-informed!
That cubase le (even it being the stripped down version) will put that cool edit to shame with one eye closed!

If you want to record a stereo track..you must add a stereo track instead of a mono track!
What i usually do is add 2 mono in's and 1 stereo in..and after you add a stereo track..choose to use the stereo in and not the mono in!But you must have both inputs plugged in to have stereo...all vocals and guitars ect....should be done in mono anyways

There is a direct monitor on switch and volume knob you have to turn up, as well as a mono switch.

ok , i made sure all settings were set to use the US-122, but i still get no playback when my earphones are plugged into the interface. I either have to listen to the playback on my computer...or listen to what i am recording through the interface. shouldnt i be able to do both? how can i lay down vocals if i cant already hear what is playing? As for recording in stereo, someone mentioned that i have to have "both inputs connected." what does this mean? what inputs? can you be more specific? the interface has inputs and outputs and so does my soundcard. the USB output is connected to the computer. i have headphones plugged in and i have a condensor mic plugged into the xlr input. ALL settings are set to use the US-122 and all of the same problems persist. what am i missing? if you could not already tell i am a newbie when it comes to usb interfaces. i appreciate the help

Are you using a condensor mic? If so, do you have phantom power on? No, you can't listen through both your computer and your 122. You should use your 122 for both playback and recording. You need to go into control panel, audio devices, and set the US122 to be the device for playback and record, and you should probably go into the BIOS and turn off your PC's soundcard.

yes i have phantom power turned on, there is no problem getting sound to record (other than it only wanting to record in mono) ok that fixed it. now i can directly monitor the recording AND the playback. Thank you very much!!! so the only problem i have left now is how to make it record my vocals, or acoustic guitar as stereo. there is no stereo setting on the us-122 (aside from the one that turns the direct monitoring into stereo) so lets say i was going to just play a simple song two tracks. one track of acoustic, and one track of vocals. what would i have to do to get both of those tracks to record in stereo instead of mono?

If you are only using one microphone to record each track, you do not want to record in stereo. One mic = mono. Recording it to a stereo track will only waste hard drive space, as you will be recording the exact same signal twice. You should track these sources in mono and add stereo effects during mixing.

Now, if you have two mics, you can record your guitar in stereo. Single vocals are almost never recorded in stereo, or with more than one mic. To do this, you need to enable a stereo track in your software. The enabled stereo track should take the left signal from the left input and the right signal will come from the right input on the US-122.

Thanks for the help everyone. I fixed all of the problems with my US-122. I also found a very helpful video that someone posted in the newbies section. something from acoustic guitar player magazine or something. one last quick question. when i record at 96khz i get this wierd "warbly" sorta noise over the track. my soundcard supports 96khz....do i have to set something differently? thanks for the help.

the us-122 does not support 96khz..i dont know where you got that information from.
It does 16/44 .. 16/48...24/44 ... 24/48 !
