help: where should i put more bass traps....(pic)

here is a sketch i made in paint of ABOUT how my room looks. the back big w alla is about 18 feet wide.

and from console wall side to back wall side is about 13 feet

i marked in red where i have 15"x4' rockwool sheets covered in fabric, and framed. the ones on the back wall are about 1.5" off the wall and the ones behind the monitors are just standing there. my room still has terrible bass cancelation. where should i put more traps?


also, is it possible my controlroom is just TOO small?


BTW im mixing on KRK Rp8s (overkill i know)

That's the big problem, and the fact that the wall behind you is cement. Since it doesn't look like you can rotate your setup, the best thing you can do is put the biggest, thickest, baddest bass traps you can on as much of that rear wall as possible.

The larger issue is that your speakers are firing the short way across the room. They should be facing the long way.

ethan, would it be possible to double layer my rockwool panels? im going to cover as much as i can, but what if where i have existing traps, i put another layer on top of them. (i have the room) would that be worth the work?

It makes much more sense to put more traps in new places, like lining all of the wall-ceiling (and even wall-floor) corners.

hi ethan! me again...

i had a quick question, i forgot to ask last time on the EM magazine article on the Bass Traps.

It states Mid/High freq, Upper-Bass(1/8"), Lowest Bass (1/4")??

just curious what ballpark freq ranges these refer to.???

i just love it. whenever i get in acoustic mode...thats the article.

reason i was curious was my rom was calculated at 200-600hz "concern" freqs. by a friend here on HR. standard drywall spare bedroom studio.
windos, avg. ceiling height...

ethan, honestly, is there any way my room is going to sound anywhere near true? cuz i just put some more bass traps on the back wall, and on some of the side walls, and theres soo much bass cancelation, and now there is this muddyness to the sound. i hate this, i wish i could just havea bigger room, but thats not gonna happen for a while. what are some of my options?

See my Post #5 above. Also line the entire rear wall with 12 inches thick fiberglass. Rigid fiberglass is best, but fluffy is much cheaper and almost as good once you get to a foot thick. If you have room for two feet thick, do that.

i'm a novice, but the traps aren't whats causing the cancellation- muddiness.

the reflections.. coming back toward the listening position, that can be out-of-phase with the speaker's output/sound causes the cancellation.

like math... +5 40hz signal (speaker ourput) + -4 40hz signal(reflection-outofphase)... gives you ONLY +1 40hz left!!
cancellation in dogs terms.

the traps try to prevent this reflection stuff, by Trapping it..taking it out of the room.

maybe your ears are being retrained, too many years of relections and not use to FLAT and DEAD???

no, i understand about cancelation, there used to be NO bass whatsoever... now t hat ive put some trapping on the back wall, there is a slight increase, but there is a strange muddieness to the sound, i dunno.
