is acoustic paneling any good? its like a white board type thing, like some stores/bussnieses use it, like its on there celling

And yes that is acoustic paneling.. it helps the store from echoing and such

If your thinking of it for treating your room.....no.
Like you said, they'll take out the echo, but that's about it. Check out some of the boo-koo threads around here for the goodz on acoustic treatment. Good stuff........

acoustically speaking

taking out the echo is good from what i've read too. many HR's have that
dry-wall of sound!
the bass traps will do a different freq range other than the mids/highs.
maybe add some bass traps with your free acoustic panels....??

yeah free is great!

It depends on the manufacturer and model/type. I actually am using some of these tiles myself. However, they are the correct type which is a yellow rigid fiberglass with a vinyl layer on one face. I've peeled this off and stack them to make up to 4" thickness. If these are free, yellow fiberglass, and you have lots of them........WOO WOO!!! If they are the standard paper mache type with holes....forget it.

I would glue them together so they were a few inches thick and put them in a checkerboard type pattern over the walls. Don't cover all of the wall surface or it will just sound muddy.

Take a 2x4 sheet of 4" rockwool cut it in half then cut the halfs in half and take the triangles you're left with and stack them in a corner from the floor to the cieling. Put a wood boarder around it then cover it with the fabric of your choice. I believe ive heard this called a superchunk. PEACE!!

That's just an excuse for having no idea at all. Comeon, the guy's 14, that makes me feel old and i'm only 17, lol. He has the right idea and wants a little guidance. He's told you already that he has next to no money, so needs the cheapest possible option. I'm in the same boat as him, poor as hell and wanting to start up my own studio. If you actually do have "some seriously good suggestions", share them, it isn't just him you will be helping, if he chooses to ignore them that's his choice, but i'll certainly take them on board, and I'm sure a few others will too.

Sorry, i just thought you were being a little unfair on him

First off, for someone who asks for help from people who DO KNOW HOW TO DO THIS CHEAP, and then says "shut up", I'd say you haven't learned any manners or respect, SON In fact, I'd say your being a punk, and theres no room here for punks. Why don't you go learn some respect, and then come back with a better attitude. You might get some serious help at that point. Till then, go play in the street with your punk friends.

I pretty much write you off with that attitude.

Yeah, Iced, respect your elders!!! lol. RICK, you need to earn respect, whatever age you are, especially with someone you've never met/talked to before. That's what so many "older" people seem to forget nowadays. Ok, you "DO KNOW HOW TO DO THIS CHEAP", please share you're knowledge and we will respect you for that. If not, DO NOT COME HERE DEMANDING RESPECT!! I'm no punk, but I hate to see youngsters, like me, get treated like shit, just because we are young. We came looking for advice, and get shit like "Ask your Daddy to use his tools. ". Ok, we're poor, but there's no need to make a joke out of it. That is why he said "Shut up". Then you come with all your shit. "You have no manners or respect son...I'd pretty much write you off with that attitude, Blah blah blah". Ok, Iced knows that he needs help, and that you guys are the ones to ask, that is why he is here. So he comes asking a question, a few of you guys help a bit but are give him options that he cannot afford so he reminds you that he is "POOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and only 14", because, it seems, some of you have forgotten this. And then to have someone start making fun of him, because of these "handicaps", would YOU not tell them to shutup? i certainly would!

Hahahahahah, Son, I have TWO THOUSAND posts here helping people. I've posted over 200 drawings, some of full studios, so I think I've EARNED my respect.

Quote:

I'd say you need to take a look around here and SEE who can demand respect. Not only that, but you have a lot of fucking gall to tell me that. Share my knowledge? All he has to do is get off his lazy punk ass and do a search and he might find the solutions he's looking for......but I think he's a little confused here. Why is he asking. He ALREADY HAS THE ANSWERS, remember!!! Or was he just being a punk.

Quote:

No one said studio building was cheap. No one said studio building was easy. Just because someone is 14 and has no money exempts him from the same requisites as anyone else. I'm sorry, but that is the reality. Try to start ANY business with no money and you will be SHIT OUT OF LUCK. Now, there are a THOUSAND posts here, showing how to do things inexpensively. Do a search on 703 and you will see. Thats about all anyone can do. Even then, it takes a small outlay of cash. I mean, where the hell did he get his recording gear, hmmmm?

BTW, the next time you go poking your head into a situation with people who DO KNOW WHAT THE FUCK THEIR TALKING ABOUT, and tell them what you told me, you might want to duck, before someone slaps your fucking face off.

He only said that, i think, because he felt like noone was helping and people were only making fun of him, so, because of his age, he said that he'd just do it himself and that he didn't need you're help, as you weren't giving much anyway. If you poke fun at someone, they aren't going to listen to what you say because they will feel you are making fun of them again, or giving them false info.

Iced, I'm going to give you the best advice I can. READ all you can here about rigid fiberglass(703) or rockwool. Then, start looking for a commercial building that is being demolished or remodled. Some of these have dropped ceiling T-grid tiles made of Owens Corning 703 YELLOW rigid fiberglass. Get as many as you can. Then, if you DID what I said, you would know WHAT to do with them. Other than that, there are virtually zero FREE materials that will improve the acoustics of your space. If you have other things you want to do in your studio that require building, such as a vocal booth, or how to improve the isolation of your space, then just ask. But I warn you, if you come off like a punk, then NO ONE is going to help you, I GUARANTEE it.

Look, I like to help people even though I am no expert. But what I DO know, is no one is going to hand you a bible on HomeStudio building. If you have project specific questions, then ask. If you don't understand some things, then FUCKING READ like everyone else!!!

START HERE. Scroll down to the Acoustics FAQ section and READ READ READ!!!
http://forum.studiotips.com/index.php

In the meantime, forget about blankets, cardboard, foam, sheets, and other amatuer solutions that do virtually NOTHING. Get a grip on the realitys, and you will be one step ahead in your quest for a home studio. Oh did I mention.........read? And btw, start READING. And heres a tip. READ.
