MIDI control of multiple modules...

I am trying to use my Fantom S88 as the master to control sounds from Emu module and Motif ES6. I have had success accessing the sounds from all 4 devices (including MPC) but I can not use my Roland sustain pedal to for all sounds. Below is my current MIDI setup, if there is something MPC based that I can do to utilize my sustain pedal for all devices, please advise:

Fantom OUT>MPC IN
MPC OUT>Fantom IN
Motif OUT>MPC IN
MPC OUT>EMU IN

Does this seem logical considering the two input/output limitations of the XL?

Any and all suggestions welcomed...

B. Morris

Does your pedal work for some sounds and not others. Maybe those patches need to be set up to recieve the sustain fuction. If you get no sustain coming out of the Roland at all check to see if it is filtering control data (Likewise for the MPC and E-mu units...I use none of these particular models, so consult your manuals for this, probably in some sort of Global page on those synths). I'd personally look into adding a MIDI patchbay/router to your setup, which will definitely give you more flexibility, and probably more dependable MIDI data transmission, and lower latency then the MIDI merging/looping method you are using now.

Thanks for the reply and confirmation that a midi patchbay might be my best option. I have battled this idea for sometime. I may be investing in one today so I am certain that I will be posting again soon.

Much obliged,

B.

Your Roland sustain pedal puts out a Midi Continuous Controller that is universally recognized as the sustain command.

Try this:

Fantom out > MPC in
Fantom in < MPC out
Fantom Thru > Motif in
Motif Thru > EMU in

Be sure to turn the 'Local on/off' on the Fantom to the 'off' position, and use the MPC to designate Midi channels to access all three devices.

Thus the "Mad Ssscientist of MIDI" has spoken. The "Guru of Global Settings", the "Connaisseur of Continious Controllers".
