Old drum recording thread???

Any one recall an older thread that delt with recording drums using a technique something like: 1 overhead 2 drumsticks directly above the snare, and another overhead over the drummers right shoulder pointed at the snare....blah, blah,.....

It had some pics and sound clips that if I recall correctly were pretty impressive for such a simple set up....

I just got a cheezy set of drums and was wanting to set them up for recording...

if someone could post a link to that thread, that would be great!! I can't seem to find it.

Thanks,
Rick

Yeah, but there's one by Spankenstein on the 4th page that is too cool!

Good stuff about placement and what not as well...

Drums suck! (for getting a good sound.........at least for me. )

good drum sound but he did'nt say what drums, heads, and cymbals he was using. he did'nt say anything about room conditions either.

True....

I've sent an email to him about the details.......we'll see I guess.

You'd think there'd be a whole lot more recorded drum tracks around here............along with all of the details of course.

I've been trying to nail down a pair of overhead mics that will double for acoustic guitar, but it's been rather hard do to the lack of recordings and comparrisons. My search has narrowed a bit, but at this point there is no clear cut winner(s).

I can't seem to find any Kick mic recorded comparrisons around here which seems kind of odd.

.........the search continues...................

I've been looking for the same thing. I did'nt go with the 603s pair because I owned the 990, which is supposed to be very similar, and I was'nt very impressed with it. I wanted a pair of oktava's or sp c4's but they're too expensive for me. I just ordered a pair of Superlux SMKH8K mics. I could'nt find any opinions on them so I just took a chance. They're supposed to be the same thing as the samson c02. I should have them within a couple of days. I'll post some clips of acoustic guitar when they get here.

That's a good point you raised there.

I think we should have a thread saying what mics you used, poistion, drum kit used. Complete with pics and also clips. Get a nice big list showing what the difrent positions do etc, with clips so people can hear.

In fact I'm going to go create on now.

I got the Superlux SMK-H8K mics in today. I've been playing around with them on my cheapo acoustic guitar. They seem to have a balanced sound, not overly bright or boomy. Let me know if there's anything you want to hear in particular. At the moment, I only have my acoustic and line6 amp available for recording. The only other mic I have to do comparisons with is a CAD M179. Oh and a couple of sm58's (ugggghhh).

I'm not sure that you would be able to judge how they sound by listening to some clips. My room is still untreated and my acoustic guitar does'nt sound too brilliant.

I just pulled the trigger on a couple of B1's with shockmounts and boomstands for 200 bucks shipped! The B1's were on my list, but I really didn't consider them one of the ones that were top in the running........But after talking with Dot about my application and budget, it seems that they were the logical choice.

I should see them next week sometime.......I don't know when I'll be able to record some clips.....I've got to figure out how to use my Delta 1010 and Adobe Audition Plus.......I've still not received my Wharfedale 8.2a's yet either.....it's going on a month!

I still need to get a kick mic, but I'm lost on that one........I'm leaning more towards a natural sounding mic verses one the is pre-Eq'd.......It seems like everyone is saying that mics like the D 112 and Beta52 are more muddy and clicky Maybe the ATM 25 is for me.....who knows?...

Glad you decided on some mics. I have heard some nice tracks done with those mics. That's a good deal too. Ebay right? I think alot of us newbs spend way too much time deciding/worrying about which gear to get. Taking advice from more experienced ears is probably the easiest way to sift thru all the options.

From what I have seen in my time hanging out here, what really matters is learning how to use the gear you own and making the most of it. Good luck with your new mics.
