What is the stadard set up for recording?

I am referring to a minmal drum set with three toms and a 1 ride, 1 crash. how do you record the extra tom?

What I will be recording into has 8 xlr inputs (yamaha AW1600). I am looking at a CAD 6- piece Mic Pack. 3 tom mic's, 2 Gxl 1200 condensers with wind screens and a kick mic.

How do the mic's pick up the hi hat? I guess I record all 6 drum mics and I will have two xlr's left over 1 for guitar and 1 for singing?

The way most people do it, including myself, is 2 (or 1, depending on your budget) overheads (condensors though), a mic on the snare and one on the bass. The overheads should generally pick up the toms and hi hats well enough.

Just set the overheads a little lower than normal, band the piss outta your toms and play the hi's as usual. I've never had to mic a hihat and its never came up to bite me in the ass. As far as toms go I hate they way they sound thru overheads, close micing is much better but you can get away with just overheads, just listen to zepplin I don't think they ever used tom mics.

You can do great with 2 overhead (spaced pair or XY) and 1 kick mic. You have to mix yourself while playing though. If you can't do that, then close mic the toms and snare also.

If you're limited for channels, but still want to close mic the toms and snare, you can use one mic between two toms. People have been doing that for years!

Overheads will pick up the hats just fine.
