I need some DIY Speaker help please
Hiya,
I found a couple SS-U580 Sony Speakers for free the other day. One of them has a busted woofer and tweeter, the other is in perfect condition. I used an epoxy on the back of the speaker paper on each of these, and it fixed them so that there's no buzz or rattle, but they just don't sound good now. They don't move as much, I guess. Anyway, I'm thinking about just replacing the woofer and tweeter in each. So, my questions are: 1 - Would replacing the woofer and tweeter in just the damaged speaker be a good idea, or would that cause too much of a sound difference between the two? 2 - Is there any place to get specific replacement parts for speakers such as these? 3 - Should I just replace the woofer and tweeter in each of them? Please note, I don't particularly like the idea of question #3, because like I said, the one speaker that is in good shape sounds very good. So, if I did this, I would want to get some good quality replacement speakers. Any advice and answers on these would be greatly appreciated, and if you have any good links to sites that sell replacement parts, that would be appreciated too. Thanks, Brandon

I've used these folks on several occasions to re-cone speakers for me. They've been doing this for many years. They're in Dallas but you can send your speakers in to them.
Freeman-Tuell, 214-324-1132 I would get both woofers and tweeters re-coned at the same time. Don't know if your speakers have a foam gasket, but these gaskets definitely have a "shelf-life". My 2¢... On edit - You can buy re-cone kits but beware that speaker cones must be mounted very precisely if you're DIYing to insure the the voice coil(s) won't rub. |
