Question Newbie Q's on drum mic'ing

Ok, so i just picked up a set of three Sennheiser e604's and a Beta 52. I have an old Yamaha MT120S that is a 4 channel (w/preamps?) mixer/recorder (tape).

I want to mic & record myself to get an idea of how well I sound playing along to music on my drumset. I know I am not all that good, but it has only been a year or so...

Anyway, I probably need one more mic for the snare, but how would you setthis all up to get it all on the old 4-track?

Quality is not all THAT important -- more so I know how I sound for time.

or do I need like a Mackie 1202 as well?

Thanks,

Dan

Well If I where you i'd either take off a tom so you have a 4-piece (then you'll have enough mics) or place one of the mics over the two rack toms (this is if you have a 5-piece). Then theres 2 left for snare and floor tom.

I've had great luck just close miking the bass drum and room miking the rest of the set. Have someone play your drums and walk around the room looking for a couple of sweet spots to place your mics. Too many people today are all about close miking (Which is okay I guess) but if you are trying to capture the actual sound a listener is hearing then mic the room. You'll be supprised!Good luck, Dave
