Cheap, mellow sounding LDC

So, I want a cheap large diaphram condensor that has a mellower, darker sound then my KSM32...pretty much something that is...well...a lot different.

The ksm32 isn't what I'd call strident.

Try a ribbon mic. With the possible exception of the Oktava, I don't think any of the ones you list will be "a lot" different / mellower.

I love my KSM32, I find it very versitle and it sounds great on vocalist that have a great natural voice. However, I read all these threads about how different mics sound better on different vocalist, so I wanted something. However, yesterday I decided to hold off on buying mics (except for an Oktava MK-012-01 at GC they have for set aside for me for $63...it's the real deal with the Russian documents and removeable capsules) and save up for a drum set I can keep at the studio/learn on. I was blown away by the Gretsch Catalina sets, so I just need to decide on which one to buy!

The M179 actually is more "mellow" compared to the KSM32, I own both.

I agree with Chess though, you want a different sound try a ribbon.

Another choice would be a high quality dynamic like a RE20 or SM7, or Sennheiser 421 or 441

Old post, but...

I've just recorded a 13-track CD, where I put my KSM32 to significant use for the first time.

Used it more than my KSM44, in fact.

Beautiful clear, and detailed sound on vocals. I love the top-end on this mic - focused and clear, without being at all strident. If you have a singer with a beautiful tone that doesn't need messing with, this mic can be an excellent choice. Good on acoustic guitar too.

To think that once upon a time, I thought my Rode NT1000 was a great mic...
