Positive reinforcement...

Ok my usual comments on how the artist sucks ass aren't getting me the result I want.

What are some nice ways to tell the "theorectical talent" that last take just wasn't good enough?

Try, "Man that was awesome, lets try it again a little different so we have something to compare too!"
or
"Uhh...I heard some popping or something in the background, make sure to keep it down while recording. Lets do it again"

Use the method that works with the "artist"...

Some need to be ego stroked and coddled, others need a swift kick in the ass. Some need a coddling kick in the balls...

One of the hardest parts of producing is trying to get the best out of an artist. As Rokket indicates each artist needs to be handled in a different way. When you read various artists comments on producers it is intersting how important the rapport is and it is even more interesting to hear what producers say about the need to "stroke artist's egos".

I try to stay very positive such as "That was a very good take, your tone was great, but I think you could be better on your articulation" or "I think you're getting better each take, let's try one one, I'm betting you'll ace this next one".

When all else fails, I do a playback and simply explain where improvements could be made - and hope that artist has the ears to hear the truth!

I don't think the issue is how to say it nice but just be specific. Tell them they were flat on the chorus, late on the verse, whatever. If you just tell them to do it better then you aren't really helping.

Playback don't lie, just play it back with emphasis on their part, if they have any sort of musical ear they will ask you if it can be redone. If they think it's fine then a more direct approach may be in order.
A recording is only as good as the worst musician will allow it to be.
