New Heads

I need some new batter and reso heads to record a new metal C-D. I am looking for some good studio heads that are punchy with out a very pingy or metal sounding ring. I want to get this with out having to dampen them any to get rid of nasty sounds. Any suggestions?

You will want a two ply head then. Maybe Remo Pinstripes. They give lots of attack with a very controlled ring.

Keep in mind though that when the guitars and cymbals are all going, you won't really hear those ringy overtones which give projection. Without those ringy overtones your drum will sound like a ruler slapping a cardboard box, especially true with smaller toms. The heavier the head (like an Evans Hydraulic...do they still make those?) the more attack and punch it will have but less projection and tone, while a lighter head (like a clear Ambassador) will give you lots of tone but less attack and punch (although if I tune a clear/coated Ambassador down a bit it gets punchy)

I personally use Remo Emperors. They're kind of half-way in between the two and real easy to tune. Punchyish and ringyish.

Yeah, I'd say Coated Emps, if you want a warmer tone.

Emps are quite close to Pinstripes.

For the batters of course use clear ambassadors. That will give you enough projection but not too much.

yeah if you use remo come on you cant go wrong with remo ambassador for the top and diplomat for the bottom and if you know how to tune and have a good ear you cant miss
