I have one of those, built by Ti Vintage audio. I've never used the brick, so i cant compare to that. It's a pretty flexible preamp with TONS of gain. I can't set it past a quarter turn without it being too much gain. It is not a transparent preamp, but a nice character unit. He uses vintage Robert's preamps, some vintage transformers, and basically makes it a plug and play unit for a reasonable price. The tube's actually begin to compress a bit when you really crank it. It gives a unique tone to DI'd keys, basses and guitars. Very thick and heavy tone. I've been recording with it for a few weeks, tried it out on snare and bass so far....
I can put up a few clips if i get the time. You can see it glowing away in the corner of this pic...my doesnt have the nice wood panel (they werent available when i got mine)... |
