One for the Amp Gurus

I have a Fender "The Twin" and the volume control is very sensitive. From off to full-on is barely a turn. Can I put in a different volume control so it's more gradual, it's a real pig to adjust on the run.

yes

has the Vol pot been replaced before?

Audio Taper Pot should fix this...

after a quick review, it looks like either 500K or 1Meg pots were used.

As far as I am aware the vol pot has not been replaced in either channel, although I have had it serviced a number of times.
Would a 500k or 1meg have any different tonalities?

let's determine which amp model you have...

go to Schematic Heaven

scroll down and click on Fender...

then match a schematic to your amp... i think there should be a sticker inside the amp housing...

No, the sticker inside only gives a listing of the valves used, the model is "The Twin" it's one of the Twin clones that was manufactured in the late 80's.

is this a known characteristic of this amp model?

I'm not familiar with that amp, but possibly a pot with a reversed audio taper from the installed pot or even a linear pot... assuming the pot installed is audio taper...

to do this correctly, you need to determine the taper you have installed

This is a bit above my electrical experience, that is OK for wiring pu's but that's it. I'll have to get in touch with a amp tech. when I go on leave, but now I know it is a possibility, thanks for that.

If its one of the red knob models, I seem to recall they are super loud and clean. Could it be that the amp is so loud that the volume taper just seems fast? There is no gain left after you "barely" give it a turn from 0?

I had a late 80's Dual Showman and it was just so darn loud that even Vol 2 or 3 was too much for most live situations. I recall it had a really fast taper like you describe - but I just attributed it to the high power and headroom of the amplifier.

Yep, that's the beast, it is super loud and clean but the distortion is as loud too. I love it, I traded a Vox AC30 in on it and haven't regretted it ever.
It's the best Amp I have ever owned out of 9 amps over 40 odd years. Cripes, about 5 of them I just seem to have lost, loaned them and left them, God knows where, hells bells, what miss-spent youth.
