do you calibrate your mixer before mixing a project? i.e., use test tones to ensure that each track is indeed centered, and that busses and auxes are equalized if sending stereo signals? Anything else I might be missing?

I "somewhat regularly" run test tones and set everything at unity to make sure the chain is solid.

If there's ever ANY question of the integrity, I drop whatever I'm doing and run a test for sure.

Thanks, massive. I was all pissed off at my mixer and ready to buy a new one....then it occured to me to just run some test tones and to compensate for its deficiencies. which is what I did. was wondering if that is normal... i.e., if I bought a new mixer i would still probably have the same problem anyway.

Well, if you can zero in on exactly where the problem is, it might be something ridiculously easy to fix.

Other times, not so easy. But either way, knowing precisely where the problem is in the chain is the first step to correcting it.

hmm...where do I start...the master bus and the sub bus are both split into L and R, which are not "equal" when set visually equal. all of the auxes are not equal (for sending stereo), the returns are not equal, hell, if I have channel 1 panned L and channel 2 Panned R, those are not equal, even coming off the direct outs, with no gain. its an old board that was gigged with a lot, but it has 16 inline channels and I got it for 300 in an skb case.
