The Analog and the Ecstasy

Not a big deal but I thought I'd share it anyway. I was looking to see how Ray Lamontagne recorded his CD and found this cool magazine link. Seems Ethan Johns, probably the most talented musician/producer out there today prefers recording to tape as well. It's interesting to see the cds he's produced because they all happen to be the ones that have caught my ear over the past couple years. http://www.pastemagazine.com/action/...rticle_id=1570

I'm not familiar with the artist but he seems to be under the impression that there was no trickery involved or available in analog recording?!

Quote:
"That’s commitment,” he says of the old-fashioned analog arrangement. “You’ve got to get it right there — there’s no going back. You can’t get too clever; you’ve got to be doing it right from the start — you can’t rely on any tricks to jazz it up later.
Thinking back to some of the classic rock albums of all time from Pink Floyd, Mike Oldfield, the Beatles....

Lots of trickery available if you want to do that sort of thing.

In reality, any time you're doing a multi-track recording, analog or digital, you are being a bit un-natural.

Cheers!

I think he was just generalizing compared to endless virtual tracks and the like that you get with digital. At least that's how I took it. I know what you mean though it does sound a bit over generalized. I can't imagine he could be that naive. Yeah, it's all trickery in a sense.

Wow this post went through? I got a message saying the website wasn't responding.
