Psycho 2205, take the TV recording, lower the volume and severly shelf off the high frequencies above, say, somehere around 1.5kHz or so. Perhaps add a little mud somewhere around 250-400Hz, but not too much, I would think.

I've turned clear head-on recordings into crap coming out of all sorts of speakers. I did a bit of sound design/foley for some short animations/movies and it was real fun! It's amazing how creative you can get if you need to fuck stuff up

Anyway, one of the things was turn a clear voice over recording into the kind of sound you hear fighter jet pilots speak. It took a very steep low and hi pass filter at very extreme frequencies, plus a bucket of distortion.

Another thing I had to do was make something sound like it was beeing shouted from far away, while the recording was close-miced. I turned it down, cut the bass and the highs (not too much though) and added some early reflections.

I think what would work pretty well in your situation is this:
Take any sound you want, and play it through your monitors. Then take a dynamic mic (just an sm57 will do). Loop the sound, and mic the speaker at different angles (get crazy). Make sure you have your mic monitoring off however, or you will get feedback like crazy. You can use any speaker though. Works great!
