Does your tape player have a built-in microphone, or is there a jack for a microphone?

Are you just talking at the tape player or are you talking into a microphone?

There's a place at the back that says 'phones' does this mean you can put a microphone in there aswell as headphones? If so does that mean I need to get a mircrophone to be able to record?

I would assume that "phones" is referring only to headphones.

What other types of jacks are on the tape player? "Aux in" or anything like that?

No, there's no other jack, the type of cd player it is, is a: Panasonic D12
I've even looked at the manual and it doesn't say how to record by talking into it...just recording by radio and cd...It must be able to record somehow..??

Dude, it sounds like you can't record your voice with that CD player. The 'phones' jack is for headphones only, not microphone. Have a look to see if there is 'mic' written anywhere on the unit, normally next to a hole or 3 in the cd player case. But, if the manual only tells you how to record from the radio or CD, I'm pretty sure you can't record your voice.

If it dosen't have mic input(s) chances are it wont record voice/live music. Those little portable units with the built in mic leave a lot to be desired, and most CD player/tape deck/ radio are not designed to record live, most don't even record from CD to tape very well.

No, Gordo, unfortunately these people are serious.

Purr, you don't beed a new recorder. What you need is a small, inexpensive mixer that has a microphone input and stereo tape outputs on it. Small mixers like this can be had for less than the cost of most microphones.

Just check out your favorite local or Internet audio dealer; you should be able to find at least a half-doxen small 4ch mixers that'll work just fine with your casette deck.

If you want to go this route, just make sure there's a built in mic or mic jack similar to the headphone jack you have already
