D-160 Questions...scrubbing and WAVs

Hi,

I recently asked a question in this forum about the fact that since I moved from the FD-8 to the D-160, I've noticed I didn't see a way to easily find preview a punch point. With the FD-8, it had a preview function that would continuously play 2 seconds or so of the track and you could use the jog dial to find the exact spot you wanted to punch.

The one reply I got said try digital scrubbing. But, again, I don't think the D-160 has this feature. It's nowhere in the manual that I can see. Any D-160 gurus know if this capability is not on the unit?

Another Q: since i have the updated software version of the D-160, supposedly it will let me transfer entire songs to computer via WAV files. Anyone ever transfer all 16 tracks and then mix in say Cubase or some other program? I'd like to experiement with it. Is it an easy process?

Although I would suspect they are similar functions, I've never used the "Auto-punch" or "Rehearsal" facilities on my D160 as anytime I've needed to punch-in, I've done it on the fly with the footswitch, so unfortunately, I can't really answer that question.

Re WAV files........as far as I'm aware, the D160 ALWAYS used Fostex's proprietry WAV format which was not compatible with PC software.........if you can run the D160 through a console and into the PC then it isn't a problem as the PC is then taking a raw audio signal. It was only in later "D" series that the WAV format used was able to be used directly with PC software. You have to remember that when the D160 was released, the availability of multiple input audio cards was pretty restricted ("in the box" systems were still in their infancy), so in all probablilty, the D160 was designed on the premis that it would be used in conjunction with a console.

Now admittedly, Fostex may have more recently issued a later version of the D160 software but considering their tendency to stop any real support for superceded models once new models are released, it would be something of a surprise..........not impossible, but a surprise.

The guy trying to take WAVs from his D-160 in that thread ended up doing it by archiving his tracks to a CD recorder (the D-160 will archive all 16 tracks to CD 2 stereo tracks at a time including sync tones). He was then able to extract mono WAVs from the stereo ones and paste all 16 to Cakewalk.

I was just hoping someone had found an easier way. One guy mentioned taking the ADAT outputs from the D-160 and going straight into a soundcard to import tracks to a PC, but I'm not sure I want to buy a soundcard with lightpipe ins just to experiment with this. Anyone else got 2 cents on this subject?
