first time miking a cab

this is the first time i tried miking my guitar cab..im trying to get that crunch Marshall jcm 800 sound and or a Mesa boogie sound..i know i wont get the same exact sound with out the real deal but im that asshole out of the bunch that thinks its possible to get that sound with the gear i have lol heres the mp3 link http://studiomxpx.tripod.com please tell me how to improve it and any setings would help thanks

Hmmm - this area is not my forte (actually , I don't have a forte - LOL).

Anyway, I used to Jam with a guy that had a JCM 900, and this sounds somewhat similiar to that. It sounds like it is a raw clip? I say that because it lacks that "in your faceness" that Marshalls have - could just need a smidge of comp/eq.

Anyway, sorry that I'm not much help, but who cares if it sounds like a marshall/mesa? All that matters is you get the sound to sound good to you.

i know what you mean i was listening to my friends Mesa clip and ithas that in your face sound..im happy with the sound but i think i can get i to come pretty close lol

Not sure if I have a forte either but here goes........most of the albums that have huge guitar sounds via Marshall or Mesa are a combination of things. 1) Double tracking at the very least (panned hard left/right or close to it). Sometimes even doubled yet again with another amp tone and blended to taste, whatever works, there is no formula. 2) Extremely tight playing =heavy/in your face. This clip is probaly just a quick demo but it sounds pretty sloppy. I know , I know lol, but it is a factor.

For this particular sound you might re-position your mic to get a little more edge/midrange/highs in the sound. Its tough to say without hearing what its going to be up against. Hope this helps.

I own both Mesa and Marshall amps. They are two completely different animals. I say this from experience. If you want the MESA sound buy a Mesa. Thats pretty much what it comes down to. They both are very nice amps though.

That's the best sounding cab I've ever heard. Most taxis sound like like shit.

Sounds pretty good. Sounds like one guitar, so it will sound a bit thin on it's own, as wireneck stated. I wouldn't throw the tone out, as it sounds fine, but keep playing around with mic position, and eq, if you are searching for a more full tone. Eq is a must, both on the amp, and in the recording. I still haven't gotten the tone I want from my guitar, so have to keep trying different things myself. It's just a matter of trying...

I think your clip (if I listened to the right one) has more of a Marshall sound, and it sounds pretty good. It sounds to me that it is missing something in the critical midrange or upper midrange area. As others have stated it may be time to play around with mic placement or tone settings on the amp. This may be information you already know, but putting the mic straight on the center of the speaker will give the brightest tone while angling it away from the center more and more will get it progressively darker and more bassy.

I am by no means a KSE expert... I only have the latest release and have been listening to KSE for about a month...

I've read that the guitars on The End of Heartache are basically a 5150 and a Framus of some sort... not sure which .

Not claiming to know much about their recording rig. I was into the original Feret records release and some of the first album but would not really call myself a fan. At any rate the 3 main culprits that are popping up on records within this style of metal are.......The Peavey 5150, Krank amps and Mesa Rectifiers. That should be a good starting point if your thinking about a new amp.
