Recording done with minimal equipment...

Hi,

A few months ago my old band set out to record an album. We had 7 days to write and record a pile of songs with minimal equipment.

Here's what we used:

Mackie 1202 mixer
Shure Sm 57
Studio Projects B1
Shure Beta 52
2 Marshall Mxl 603s
Sound Blaster LIVE! (lol, thats right)

So with minimal mixing nowledge or recording skill here's what we accomplished. There's a few screwups in the drums and some of the instruments and stuff, but you gotta remember 7 days, and we were just doing this for fun. So I put a few of the songs up on sound click, check them out, and tell me what you think!

Listening to the first song now. Pretty good tune, but seems to come across my system a bit loud. Some things are clipping. You're levels seem to be a bit high. Don't know if you can fix this. Sounds like a good song, just coming in a bit harsh.

The levels of the vocals are all over the place on the 1st and 2nd songs.
The E-Guitar in the 1st song could use some major EQ. It needs some more bite or something.

I love the 3rd song. Vocals are sound good but dry.

Just my opinion. I’m not the greatest at mixing but I’m learning.
And this is on my PC speakers.

That's better than anything I've ever attempted on a Sounds Ghastly but I'd focus on striving toward getting a more intimate texture on the mix. The maxxo blasto mixdown compression plug-in *NOT* your friend on EMO material like this.

People are drawn in to a song like this on the emotion, not the volume.

Strive for DYNAMIC RANGE in place of maximum output SPL.

You'll be thanking me in the morning!

Talking

Yeah my singer is loud. He really gives it all into his singing, and I really I like the emotion that comes out of it. What would be a better way to track a loud vocalist? Haha, there's actually no compression, or really anything done to the mix. But basically we just tried to keep everything near the top of the sound meter without redlining. I guess this is the wrong approach isn't it.
