Question

When I playback my mix on the Portastudio, the sound is clear and packs a punch.
Then I send it to minidisc and it is softer and low.
What could be the problem?
I'm fairly new at this.

I have a Sony JES-510 Minidisc recorder. My guess is that you need to turn the record level knob on the MD up.Watch the meters on the MD,I find that I can let the meters go occasionally into the "red" zone without any audible distortion, but you may not have a similar machine. In any case, you still should be able to have the meters on the MD hovering near the top of their scale while recording without ruining the take.

I tried your idea, you are right about the distortion. Maybe it's just trying to send analog to disc? Will going digital make any difference?
