Clavinova 305

Atterion or Sscientist ( or anyone else), know anything about the clavinova? seems like a monster.

I have a friend that's getting into digital audio, MIDI etc. She is asking for help in regards to recording a demo project. I downloaded the manual.. man this thing is THE beast!! You an even get online with it, optical, MIDI, sequencer,USB, blah blah,and blah.

Trying to figure whats the best approach? I use a controller and module , softy etc.and know how to record MIDI etc, but whoa this is above me.. there are so many options.

Any pointers??

According to the Yamaha web site the 305 has an optical port for recording to an external CD recorder as well as the USB interface, but they don't say which is for data backup. In my opinion, the important thing to get straightened out right from the start is a method for working on more than one song at a time --- in other words, a way to switch to a different song and later start where you left off on the first one. The jargon these home-oriented keyboards use is a little unfamiliar to me and it's unclear whether or not what we call multis are able to be stored, but I assume they wouldn't put one of these on the market without such a facility.

You don't say if this project will be original music, covers or some combination but the web site says once you're on the internet with the Clavinova there are 'many' songs to pick from and download directly.

If you're advising on this, take it one step at a time and remember the basic concepts of midi sequencing are the same as you're used to.

Thanks Sssientist, it does have some weird verbage. I think the data backup is via USB and/or a floppy of some sort.
The "artist" is using DP(Digital Performer) to bring in the tune and wants to "process it digitally". Which I am running also so that part should be ok. What I need to find out is if she is using the song function within the clav. That could be a mess.
The genre is "meditative music", so I ssuming new age/ambience at this point- original. Maybe I can get a mixing deal out of it. I will have to check it out to see the approach she is taking, and hopefully find the best way to get a DEMO level mix going. Im guessing at this point it would be best to track into DP and try to keep all the assignments (voices-channels etc) recorded for immediate recall. Not sure about the accompaniment tracks assignable to a channel or whatnot, which could pose some headache. All in all its MIDI afterall.
