newbie confused with panning tracks

im not quite understanding how i pan tracks once they've been recorded. im using cubasis (the one that comes with the emu 0404) and i recorded three seperate guitar tracks for one song. i want one track to be totally panned to the right, one to the left, and one in the center. seems simple, (it was on my old 4track ) but i cant get them to pan at all. tried highlighting the track and then just adjusting the pan control and nothing happens. is there something i should be doing differently when i first record the tracks?

........im sure im missing something simple but i am a little slow at this stuff. i liked it better when all i had to do was turn a little dial....

When you are changing Pan for a channel, the setting is shown numerically
(L63–R63) in the level display below the fader. Does your show? Make sure the mono switch in the master window is not activated. If it is the pan settings will have no effect.

yes i do see the numbers change but they dont do anything. but i do have the mono button enabled. then when i hit it to try and change to stereo it says no stereo tracks on mono and vice versa. im guessing this is because i needed to have recorded with the stereo enabled in the first place...is that right?
im confused about the whole mono/stereo thing a little. when i choose my inputs for a track i can choose either left in, right in, or stereo in. i choose left in because thats the one i plug my preamp into. and since my emu 0404 has unbalanced inputs i just use a regular guitar cable to go from preamp to soundcard....so will this setup affect my mono/stereo recording capabilities? i dont want to get too elaborate because all i want to do right now is record a couple of guitar tracks and then pan them.
thanks for your help by the way...i m obviously lost in the woods and very easily confused.

Your input setup is fine, just how it's supposed to be.

NYmorning was referring to the MASTER output mono/stereo switch, not the one on the individual track. It sounds as if either that is set to mono or something else in your monitoring chain is making it mono.

ah ha!! thats the ticket! not the master mono button..that was not enabled..but my soundcard monitoring software was not set correctly. when you said something in the monitoring chain was screwed up that sent me in the right direction. thank you so much! you have no idea how crazy all these simple little things are driving me.

its confusing to me because my souncard monitor has one control strip (like on any mixer) for both my left and right output. that strip then has a fader for the left pan and right pan which need to be set all the way to the left and right...as i talk it through it makes more sense.

thanks for your help guys!!
