Super Noob question- Use QS-8 to play soft synths?

Hello all- I ask for your mercy in advance for what I am guessing is a horribly noobie question:

I have an Alesis QS-8 and use it to sequence in Sonar 4. I am new to the world of soft synths and was wondering if there is a simple way to also use the Alesis as a midi controller (keyboard) in order to play the soft synth lines into Sonar. I would then want to go back to having the Alesis play its own sounds for my other QS-8 MIDI tracks. Is this do-able? If so, what do I have to do with the QS-8 to make this work?

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

First you need to set up an audio track with the synth you want to use in the FX bin

Then setup a MIDI track with the input set to the MIDI port your QS8 is attached to and the output set to the synth you just setup in the audio track.

Set the output of the audio track as you normally do (e.g. wave out...)

Now when you press a key on your QS8 you should be hearing the soft synth

Once you record the MIDI (and/or the synth audio) you can go back to using the QS8 for its internal sounds

Good luck
Erich
