Fostex D2424LV Experience...

What's been your experience with the D2424LV? Good? Bad? Okay?

I've owned mine for a coupe of years now and it performs like a champ. I'm incredibly happy with it and I'd buy another in a heart beat if I had the money (which isn't that much considering the piece of gear you're getting).

Can I ask what digital mixer (or DAW interface) do you use with your D2424LV? I'm thinking about upgrading from my VF-16, and the D2424LV seems like the most bang for the buck. But I'd like to hear some other user's real world experience with which mixer would make the most sense with the D2424LV. Thanks.

Also...has anyone ever tried linking/syncing any of those Fostex hard-disk recorders (D-80, D-160, D2424LV, etc.) with their VF-16 or VF-160? If so, how did you do it, and how do you mix down to a common stereo source?

Well that's probably the first time I've seen a bad word about the Fostex "D" series recorders. I've had a D160 running faultlessly for a few years and I'm acquainted with other guys using "D" recorders without any problems..........they normally are "rock solid".



I will add that I'm not refering to actual H/drive failures (which can happen regardless of which brand recorder they are in)......just the Fostex itself.

I have used my D2424Lv to record several commercial CD projects, and made my money back for the unit many times over. On the other hand I spent a fortune on ADAT's and Tapes, and I couldn't give those junkers away...

I kept one ADAT just in case a customer needs it for a transfer or mixdown etc.

I use my fostex D2424lv with 2 Behringer MX3242's. I chose that mixer because it was inexpensive but completely in-line. It has a linking feature, meaning you can hook multiple MX3242's together. I have all of my stuff in a tall, rolling rack because sometimes I have to roll it into the drum room if I'm doing everything myself, otherwise I would've bought something a bit more stationary and all-in-one. They aren't digital, but the work pretty well. Obviously, they aren't the best mixers on earth, but they aren't bad.

I sync my Fostex with my computer and Echo Layla24 and transfer all of the tracks to Cubase SX for mixing and mastering. I use the ADAT lightpipe interface to keep all the tracks seperate. Works great. But I've also done some rough mixes not transferring the tracks into the computer. Sound fairly good, but at that stage it's all about the mixing. Then I mixdown to Wavelab on my computer.

I used to own a Roland VS1680 and it was good at the time, but I love this setup much more. Although, not quite as portable.

How many channels of ADAT can you simultaneously send/receive on your D2424LV? Are there 3 "in" ADAT ports as well as 3 "out" ADAT ports?

It has 3 ADAT inputs and 3 ADAT outputs, for a total of 24 in and 24 out simultaneously. Although, my Echo Layla sound card only has 1 in and 1 out so I have to sync up the Fostex and do 3 passes for each song to transfer the tracks into the computer.

It is as close as I can get to the sound of my 2" MCI machine. A great sounding machine if you have to go digital. The converters are nice sounding as opposed to the harshness I have experienced on a few others (Alesis to name one).


I use mine alot for pre-production, and have dumped many tracks right to tape regularly when the performance warrants it.
