AT4040 condensor
I'm currently looking to buy a new large diaphragm condensor microphone for under $300, maybe just a little over. I was going to get the AT4040 but i recently read one or two people's posts on this site saying that they didnt like it. I'm using it for vocals, cello, guitar amps, room mics, etc. So i need a versatile mic. Anyone own or know much about the AT4040 and would anyone recommend another mic in the same price range instead?

I've got a 4040, and use it for vocals, and it seems to work fine for me. I haven't tried it on an acoustic guitar yet, but will someday. As far as micing an amp, I'm not sure it is the best for that. Most people seem to like a 57, or something similar. Hopefully someone with more experience using different mics can give you better input.

There's always going to be someone who doesn't like something. If you shop for everything based on that, then you probably won't wind up buying anything. ![]() . |

I think more people like them for the money than not....

The AT4040 is not my main vocal mic but I've always liked whenever I use it.

In that price range the AT4040 arguably might be the only "versatile" large diaphragm condenser mic that actually passes musical sounds rather than just a signal.
Here's a review from Pro Audio Review... http://www.proaudioreview.com/sept02...a_AT4040.shtml |

Awesome, awesome mic.
I have two and I use them for a lot, as overheads on drums they sound great (this forum reccomended I buy a second for overheads when I was looking to save some cash), and they sound great on a lot of vocals I've used them on, included metal style screamed vocals (it sounded better than my sm57 in that application), havent tried it on acoustic guitar, and on high gain guitar, it actually adds some meat when combined with a 57. sexcellent. $200 each on ebay, new. |

Just buy it dude, you won't be disappointed. As I often say, it's like farting through silk!
Some sites offer the AT4040 with free headphones too, so shop around.Someone should do a poll for how many board members own an AT4040. That should be your next post Kasey! ![]()
