What Is Midi

i am new to this....what is midi and how is it used...i am looking at Cubase recording software and MIDI is one of the features....looking for some answers..thanks

NewbMediaGuy is on a distinguished road
basically a set of instructions sent through a cable. So a midi file could be used to tell your computer to play a certain key at a certain velocity at a certain time.

I'm far from a MIDI expert but I think that's pretty much the basics.
