Arrow XP64 or not?

What can I expect or not expect by upgrading from win2000 to XP64?
Heres my hardware:
ASUS K8V SE DLX
AMD XP64 3000+ cpu
MAudio Delta 44
Nvidia geforce

Software: Cubase SX

Is it worth the time? Anybody done it?

Any assistance would be great.

I'd first make sure all the equipment you have supports 64bit i.e. the manufacturers provide 64bit drivers.

well, if youre going to XP the best bet is to do a clean install...

1. backup all data
2. delete or format harddrives (ntfs is better than fat32 in my opinion)
3. install XP
4. install all drivers and software...

i did it to mine a couple of months ago and noticed a massive increase in performance
ie. latency 120 down to 10

i can only say that the geforce and cubase sx will do fine (thats pretty much what i run)
everything else should enjoy it as well

..if youre a tweaker... make sure to install pro and not home... pro has a lot more tweakability... which comes in handy with audio...

most drivers are pretty similiar between 2000 and XP... just make sure you get all the latest drivers for XP before you re-install.....(it sucks having to d/l drivers from another computer because yours doesnt have the correct modem driver)

i recommend doing it as soon as possible

good luck

the big diff you will see is if you address over 4 gig of ram memory, that is for now. Later, when your software is rewritten or recompiled with a 64 bit compilor you can expect to see a lot of performance difference (you may not, but you can expect it). I think most motherboards will need the bios flashed with an update.

IMO, wait till the first service pack is released for XP 64, that is what I am doing. you might want to upgrade to dual core processor if your motherboard chipset will support it (when you upgrade to XP64)

XP Pro was kinda ugly till SP1. I think they are up to SP3 now.

this is conservative advice, I know. YMMV

I like your philosophy. I always wait until at least SP1 for each MS OS. There is a bit of maturity needed yet for XP 64, and I believe quite a few of the drivers are still beta drivers. Not to say I'm not drooling over a 64 bit system and especially a dual core processor. I've got my eye on the AMD 64, but it's a ways off for me!

I'm pretty damn excited for 64 bit software to compliment a future 64 bit processor based system. DAW's will only get better.

the hardware seems to always outrun the software...

what do you think about this:

rstiltskin's LAW:
every MS operating system will not do what it is advertised to do, it will, however, do what was promised for the PREVIOUS MS operating system.

for instance, win 95 did what win 3.1 was supposed to do. win 98 did what 95 was supposed to do, but did'nt.

whatcha think?

I think I'm happy with XP Pro. I haven't had any show stopping problems thus far and I even have SP2 installed Guess I'm in the minority judging by what I've seen around here.

I run XP Home SP1 My latest project is 106 tracks (About 50/50, audio/midi), and my vst performance is about 55%, with a whole buttload of FX. I'll wait.
