$175,000 starting bid for Les Paul on ebay

The starting bid on this baby is $175k.

I could have a sweet studio for that much cash.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...334106562&rd=1

If I hang on to my Epi Les Paul for 50 years I think I could get $300 for it.

Uh, yeah, OK.

No previous history or feedback, and a extremly valuable vintage guitar.

I doubt it's any sort of scam, since such a high value attracts a lot of attention. I'm sure the seller would be smart enough to know that anyone with that kind of money probably has no problem hiring a P.I. and/or assassin as well, heh.

Could be a joke though I guess.

I've got the Blue Book and also a complete history of Gibson guitars right here in front of me.

The first Les Pauls, made in 1952-1953, had a trapeze bridge/tailpiece.

In late 1953, and throughout 1954, a "wrapover" bridge/tailpiece replaced the original trapeze bridge.

The stoptail (tune-o-matic) bridge wasn't introduced until 1955.

The Les Paul in that picture (which, BTW, is a shitty picture for such a high asking price) looks like a stoptail to me. Gibson didn't replace the P-90's with PAF humbuckers until 1957. Since that guitar has P-90's and a stoptail bridge, that would make it either a 1955 or 1956 Les Paul. A 1956 Les Paul in "100% mint condition" tops out at $15,000, according to the Blue Book. Judging by that shitty, grainey picture, I doubt that that Les Paul is anywhere near mint condition.

It's not a scam, the guitar is probably a genuine '55 or '56 Les Paul.

But it sure is one whopper of a rip-off at that price!

In my opinion, a true vintage guitar would be far more likely to show up at a vintage guitar show rather than on ebay. No one in their right mind would consider spending that much money without a carefull examination or an apprasial by several "experts" and some sort of verification that it is the genuine article. As for me, for that much money I'd buy a room full of less expensive guitars which I could really enjoy.

Is it just me or does that cutaway look wrong? Every other LP I've seen, other than the double cutaways, have a smoothly rounded upper part. This one looks like a shark fin.

I guess I'll buy it anyway, just so I can check out the cutaway in person.

I just sent the seller an email w/ the following very familar text: (Thanks to Buck62 for the research...)
Quote:

Are you talking about US dollars here?
I'll post any reply I receive...

I've got a black Les Paul; if you took a picture of it under similar conditions, it would look identical to this one other than the pickup covers being off. I paid $350 for it in 1976.

I'll put the covers back on it and ship it anywhere in the world for JUST $150,000! If you call in the next 15 minutes, I'll throw in the hardshell case that's held together with VINTAGE duct tape! Come on guys, this is your chance to save a cool $25,000!
