Compressor question

So after a little work I finally have my firepod going. Last night I was playing around with the settings and finally got things going. So I decided to set up the firepod for recording drums. Since we're running on a budget we use an used dbx 266 one channel for compressing bass drum and the other for compressing snare. Unfortunately all our equipment is in our van since we multiple shows this weekend and not enough time to break out the entire set.

So I decided to test the compressed channels with a Sennheiser e835, a basic vocal mic we use for rehearsing. I tried hooking up the compressor in all different ways (an aux send from my mixer, a "tip"/"ring" insert sorry I dont know the right terminology for that one, and as hooking it up as an dynamics processor from the firepod). Each time the compressor indicated that it was compressing, but there was no noticable difference on the monitors or on headphones.

Could it be that the compression would just be more noticable on a kick or snare or do I not have this hooked up right? If I can't get it going one of these ways I'll just bypass the mixer and run the mics directly into the compressor and then in to the firepod, but I would like to have eq options before I record and not have to do all the eqing afterwards on the computer. So any advice/knowledge is appreciated. Thanks.
