I don't know; but swap out the fan for a quiet one. Also drop in Seagate Barracuda drives; they rule!

Yes it can be extended. I've used one about that long and had no problems.

I have connections all over the studio for moving the remote.
I use two conductor wiring (TR).
Works like a champ.

I have been successful extending it using a TRS cable as well. As for the noise, if there was one great thing to do - it would be to solder in a quieter fan. With the new fan, and a quiet HD, you can track in the same room nearby.

I replaced mine with this one, the quietest fan anywhere, only 20db.

Regarding hard drives, I used Maxtor DiamondMax 160GB, Seagate Barracuda 200GB, Hitachi Deskstar 120GB in the past with good results.

The fan fits without mods, make sure you get the 80mm one.
The plug doesn't fit, but I only tried the one with 4 pins. I just cut the wires and spliced them together. You could try the smaller 3 pin version.

It's quiet, I can't hear the fan at all.

Both 3 and 4 pin fans will not fit into the power socket in the HD24. As mentioned, you simply cut off the old fan, strip the wires and solder them together. I then melted heatshrink over the connection. It wasnt a hard job in the least and the difference is very noticable.

As for harddrives - I personally like Seagates as they are quiet and come with a 5 yr warranty.

For the fan - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hd24/message/2027
