Building diffusion panels

Everyone is always talking about building their own sound absorption panels, but all i've heard about building diffusion panels is just to put up a bunch of plywood boards everywhere - does anyone know how to build diffusion panels (for fairly cheap) that actually sound like good diffusion panels?

this really should be in the studio building forum but i'll bite, because I am about to try this so maybe someone will give me some more info as well.

I was going to take like maybe 60 or more feet of 2x2's, cut to random lengths, between like an inch and 5 inches. then glued onto a 3' x 3' wood board, all random like. hang on wall, enjoy.

If you're room isn't very large, you might not get much benefit from diffusion; probably better to focus on low to mid absorption and have enough reflective surfaces around not to kill the highs.

In any case, a diffusor as Falken discussed above shouldn't be in random lengths. To be effective, they should be based on specific lengths related to prime numbers--this link discusses it pretty well: http://cardboardcat.blogspot.com/200...-diffusor.html

And here's one from John Sayer's forums: http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/vi...t=323&start=15

wow! I had no idea. But indeed you are correct. My only question now is, how does the sequence relate to the ordering. do you just place the sequence horizontally, then go to the next line, like reading english? is it center out? random?

I've never actually built one, so can't say for sure. I seem to recall at one point in looking into it that the dimensions had to be fixed somehow too based on the numerical sequence you were using. Somebody on this site (Todzilla maybe?) had some plans for one of fixed dimensions I think.

Here's another link (good one) that describes dimensions a bit more that Ethan posted over in the other thread: http://www.mhsoft.nl/Diffusor.asp

Do you have a well stocked bookcase on one or 2 walls??? I have heard (seriosuly) that's a decent diffusor... (w/ different size books...)

gotcha on that link. that looks like a really easy way to build a diffusor. what I was thinking woudln't be based on gaps though. it would be more like the knobs on a mixer- sticking out-but would still be based on that number pattern. I was thinking random might just do it though...
