the glory and the dream (heavy)

song called the glory and the dream from a band done recently, nearly done
just like to get some opinions from the gang before i sew it up
the band is fairground ave.

just so you know, i like the band but personally think the screamer needs a little work.
tear it up

It's downloading as I type. I'll let you know what I think when I hear it. But for now, you might want to tell them that there's no "e" in "glory".

Well, the musicianship is pretty damn good. I agree with you about the screaming parts, but I'm not a metal fan, so I wouldn't go by what I say. Great riffs, good tune. Some very good drumming, if not a little too busy at times. But again, I don't know this type of music so don't take my word for it. I think the singer has a great voice when he's actually singing.

Dude, I like em. Guitars sound cool, and the music is recorded well. He might need work, but sounds as good as half the screamer guys I hear when I watch Headbangers Ball. Song is just as good as most of that stuff also. Well done.

Well coming from a huge metal fan, This is pretty damn good! Really its not any of the musicians who are in need of work, but you guys deserve a really nice studio!! This recording is pretty good though. As for the screamer... Not bad but if he is trying to pull of that kind of hardcore screaming he should get some killswitch engage and maybe try to get a high scream sound kind of like the ones howard does. Otherwise pretty good... Sick breakdown! Great drummer!

uhh its charlie is an unknown quantity at this point
i dont know what it is, but the verses seem a little empty. i love their sound though, maybe get autotone, it'd help a bit.

i like the guy's scream, it's very raw and emotional. i love that feel.

great job

Ever heard the song A Bid Farewell by Killswitch Engage? The background guitar lick in this song has a great amount of reverb on the track, which sounds like the guitar is flooding through a concert hall. I would suggest that you guys do that with that melodic guitar line when the drummer goes back into the hi-hat beat the second time.

Otherwise, I just can't get away from how High energy this drummer is in this song. Sounds really good to me.

Allrite here goes..

Quite nice job here. Overall the "soundscene" is quite dry thou. I would maby add some more spices. I think this track would benefit them and make it a bit bigger and more blended, but this is just my humble opinion.

Okay, about the invidual instruments:

- Drums: I feel the drums are bit too "roomy" and raw sounding. Overheads are good. I would like to the hear a bit more snare; It think it is a bit dull and roomy. Kick is a bit roomy and muddy too, I find it infact quite annoying.

- Bass: Hmh I can't really hear it as I would like. The kick and bass aren't quite working it yet. They aren't "glued together". Try to get them to play as a one instrument. I can hear that the muscianship&arragment completely leans towards this type of kick/bass syncronizing. There is quite freq. bumb down there too. I don't know if it is rythm guitars or the bass, but that needs some fixing.

- Guitars: Marshalls... hmh.. Most of my "spices" would go here. Especially that guitar riff eg at around 0:45 needs something. Make it to have the the "spotlight" when it kicks in, make it more interesting. Same with the 1:25 one. Maby some delays and verb. Rhythm guitars are tight and quite good. That low end bothers.

- Vox: Hmh.. Somehow quite raw sounding. Not too bad but I would like it to be abit more infront/in your face. Needs to be bigger.

Overall mix is quite balanced, especially volumewise (the vox is a bit too low/background IMO thou, not really a volume issue.). Sounds like you have mixed it with the "less is better" attitude, which is infact a good way to go (IMHO at least). Freq.wise there is few things to do. That low end needs to be fixed (around 250hz I believe) also the snare would benefit some EQing. Same with kick. Again I think it needs bit more spices to get it to glue better. It is quite dry, but whatever you are after

At the moment it is overall a bit roomy and "muddy" and raw (somehow "demoish" heh). It should open up/clarify a bit when working that low end away.

Hope this helps

Hehe, I find the kick being the most disturbing . But dunno when it really "kicks in" with the bass. Makes it usually completely different sounding low end. You don't get kick and bass, you get kickbass!

Yeah, I hate those snare tracks. Can't give precense without screwing the HH.. Snare bottom track might have helped a bit.

I like it! Great musicianship and gotta love that drummer. Double kicks rule! Was that actually two kick drums or a double pedal?

About the only thing that bothered me was the clarity in the low end. Everything else had so much presence but the low end was a bit obscured. But I thought the kick, snare, guitars and vox sounded nice and clean. Very distinct. I guess if I had to narrow it down I'd have to say that I'd like to hear the bass guitar a bit cleaner with the notes more apparent. Does that make sense?

Good job!

double pedal

same thing (about the low end) kaints said, and yes something is going on down thare i need to tame. probably the bass (maby one of the gits), never quite been happy with the sound.
i'll play with it more.

i previously tried some cuts in the low mids (over the master), but i like the power comeing from that area.
maby i need to reconsider.

bass could prob just come up a little too.
(usually a bass in one of my mixes is to loud, this is a change)

thanks to all

The bass itself may already be plenty loud enough. It's just not distinct enough. Try soloing the track and get it more distinct and then listen to it in the mix. When solo'd the bass should sound almost TOO thin. But when placed back in the mix it will fit. Try it. You'll see. Then when you get it sounding clean and crisp you can determine whether you need to bring it up in the mix or not. Now, I'm assuming that it's possible you may not know this so if you already do, no offense intended.
