what to do with a pre

so you take your mic and plug that into your mic preamp (we'll use the SP VTB for example) so you plug it into the XRL input and then from there do you take your 1/4" outputs to the mixer or just straight into the recording device??????

thank you in advance

Shortest path possible would be best. Straight to the recorder. Unless you need to go through the mixer for monitoring or other purpose.

If you did want to go through the mixer (although as said it's best not to if you don't need to) then you'd use the line in and not the mic input.
