Unhappy HELP!! lawnmower in my machine

OK; I'm a musician. I am VERY new to the whole home recording thing and I don't know crap about computers. I have a Compaq Presario (about 4 years old). I bought Cakewalk Music Creator Pro thinking I can start doing some recording at home. I installed it and I can import my MIDI stuff. But how do I record the rest of it?? I'm running my guitar and mics through a 100W PA/mixer that I use for live shows. I have a line-out going from the PA to the line-in jack in the back of the computer. But everytime I arm a track to record, all i get is a very loud growl that sounds like a lawnmower.

NOTHING I have tried can get rid of this noise. I've exhausted the help menu, installed all new drivers. Then I even completely unplugged from the computer and armed the track and got the same thing. Do I need to buy a better mixer or do I have to get all up in the technical stuff and change setting or install new cards or something?

PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Your line out from the PA mixer might not match impedence w/ the line in on the sound card. See how that line out sounds when you hook it up to something else that accepts a line in. Are you using the tape-outs from the mixer? They should be ok. Also, try something else that has a decent line out like a cd player or something and see if your line in on the pc card is ok.
