Ideas on building desk?
I have my board sitting on this crappy old table (foldable legs and all...) and I want to make a desk for it someday. I've never really built much anything, but I know people who will give me a hand. Attached is an old picture of my board, to give you an idea. It's 38" by 24" in size. It's actually a PA board from the 80s, so the flight case it's sort of built into it...I don't want to try removing it again, I did, but I found the mixer had no real bottom and there was a load of wires underneath, so I didn't want to start messing it up...hard enough to get the board back in the case.
Just wondering if anyone has any tips or ideas, 'cause I've seen some nice homemade desks on here. If the mixer being in the flight case is not a big deal, my vision is kind of having the board sitting "in the desk" so basically there is a space that the board would sort of be placed in (a few desks on here have done it that way, seems common). The board doesn't have a bridge metre, but I want like a part going along the back so I can place monitors on it, and possibly a computer monitor. I don't really have any rack gear or patchbays, so I don't think I need to get into building that into the desk...but it would be good to leave my options open for the future. I know this post is kind of vague, if anyone is bored enough, let's hear from ya. |

I made a desk for my daughter out of two roll around drawer sets, a piece of shelving, and some double sticky tape. Inexpensive, space effecient, and gave lots of extra storage.

Go to your local Hardware store and buy a sheet of sanded Oak and four 6" stair-rail post for the legs. You'll need to cut the plywood and post down to size and attach the legs/post. You can buy some nice trim to nail around the edge of the plywood. Then stain and paint on a few cost of poly urathane.

It's not too hard to build your own with some basic hand tools. I built mine and all my racks.

Hmm, I've also liked your setup Track Rat. I have tools in my house and my girlfriend's stepdad has probably every tool you could want. I've just never done this kind of thing. Do you have any plans done for that desk?

No, but the basic concept can easily be adapted to just about any mixer.

here is a website with a compilation of desks people have built over the past couple of years, including trackrat's.

I have some ideas I'd really like to sketch out. What are good programs for doing basic lines with measurements and that sort of thing?

A cheap alternative to getting expensive wood is to buy the thick particle board, and then glue and tack 1/8" birch plywood to the surface and edges. After staining and laquer (sp?) it looks pretty nice and without close inspection appears to be expensive solid wood.
I haven't built a desk with this method but have recently re-surfaced an old desk and it turned out great. |

Are you anywhere near a university? Most of them have surplus stores. I got an awesome desk that can fit my board (24 channels), monitors, computer, and even has spaces that are the exact dimensions as rack spaces all for $20. They even tossed in a hideous orange chair.
