Unhappy soundcard

HELP!!!

I'm trying to record using Cakewalk Music Creator Pro. Whenever I arm a track to record, it sounds like a lawnmower. Even after I unplug everything and there is nothing going into the PC, I still get the same loud growl.

I have a SoundMAX audio card which I have enabled in Cakewalk and in my computer properties. But all of my input jacks look as though they are going into the onboard soundcard. Cakewalk is only giving me SoundMAX as an option but there are no seperate jacks for the SoundMAX card. I've also gone into the BIOS and tried to enable the onboard sound but it doesn't show on the menu. It won't let me record in the Windows Sound Recorder either.

Thanks,
Hank Slaughter

Do you have the drivers installed and set up properly? Maybe get an updated driver.

Yes, new drivers were downloaded from the HP website and installed. The BIOS was also updated.
