question about Mackie Onyx series

to use those Mixers I have to buy the Firewire I/O Card?
or just plug it to the firewire input and it will work without sound card?

for what use the Firewire I/O Card needed?

Those Mackie Onyx's have been misrepresented in Mackie's advertising as being as much for computer musicians as they are for live work.

This is not the case. You can only record two tracks at a time thru the firewire interface, then you need to mix 'in the box', then you can bring the resulting stereo mix back thru the FW interface.

I, as well as many others, were under the impression that they offered 16 ins and 16 outs via Firewire. I almost made the mistake of talking a newbie into spending his hard-earned cash on one when they were first on the market. Fortunately, he decided on another way to spend his dosh...

Actually, I believe the Firewire add on from the Mackie Onyx allows 16 (or 18?) channels of of simultaneous recording, but only 2 channels of playback. The big issue seems to be the pre fader/EQ sends.
