Desk and monitor distance from wall?

This is kind of a generic and general question, but how far should a desk and monitors be from a wall? I'm almost finished with the purchasing and planning of my studio (18.5' x 11.5'). I bought an Omnirax Force 36 desk today and should be here by the 26th. I'll also be getting a pair of the Mackie 824s, which I've read on here are quite bass heavy depending on where in a room they're located. So, back to topic, are there any general rules of thumb on desk/monitor placement?

Here's the layout of my studio. Desk and equipment positions have yet to be determined, but I'd like the desk facing north, as shown in light gray. Opinions? Is three feet from the wall okay?

Yes, and I believe this article from my company's site is exactly what you're looking for:

Thanks, Ethan. I'll review it tonight if I get a lull in work!

Thumbs up

Thanks again, Ethan. I had a chance to read through that essay and I believe that it will help me set up once I get my desk and monitors.

Ethan,

Ah! Help. I have a question. I'm setting up my room now and am unsure of how to use the 38% rule due to the split South wall. My desk will be facing the North wall. Should I place the desk (18'5.5" x 38%) from the wall or use the (15'1.5" x 38%) figure? That second distance on the East wall has a opening, so it's isn't even a solid wall the whole lenghth. I don't split the difference between the East and West walls, do I? I'm not quite sure what to do in this situation.

Muff,

The shorter section has what looks like a "flexible divider" rather than a rigid wall, so you'll still consider the room as being the longer dimension.
