Edirol MA-15D or Samson Resolv 50a monitors...any opinions?

hi everyone,

with the kind of setup im going for, i can only justify monitors up until 200 bucks probably...im looking at these, what does everyone (or the ppl who have tried 'em) think...this bass enhancer sure looks scary (i wonder if im better off with a sub and smaller monitors altogether), but who knows, might work...i really would like to know wether or not these are worth it..

http://www.edirol.com/products/info/ma15d.html

i can probably swing it till here...would this be a lot better?

http://www.samsontech.com/products/p...1666&brandID=2

also, i have a misconception, dunno if anyone can enlighten me a bit...if i happen to go with passives, will any amp do? i mean, is there a difference, or a significant difference between a good amp and a normal one? or its just power and thats all it matters to power the monitors...if so, what would be a decent but cheap and widely avaliabe amp?

tanx in advance..

I'm looking for something along the same lines that you are - a modest pair of good-sounding speakers to monitor my home setup. My advice (if possible) is to visit a local superstore --- GC springs to mind unfortunately --- and have them set up a listening test in a side room. You've already picked two likely candidates, and they'll probably stand still for you picking one more. My choice would be these but they're substantially more 'spensitive.

Powered speakers have caught on big time for a reason. They're much cheaper than buying a seperate power amp and passive speakers and the power source is frequently bi-amped with a factory approved crossover frequency that is suited to both the cabinet and the speaker. And you can't use any ol' home stereo amp that you get at Best Buy. Well, you CAN but you shouldn't. Here's one that looks like it would work, but that adds $150 to the cost of the speakers. My advice is - if at all possible, stick with the active speakers.

The Edirols are pretty much junk to my ears. Haven't heard the Samsons. The cheapest amp I'd get would be a Samson Servo 170 (they're actually one of the better Samson items), but it's probably cheaper to get active ones, with the benefit of an active crossover in all but the cheapest.

Hmmm ... Samsons Resolve 65s are 'ok', ESI nEar05 and M-Audio's 5" ones are options.

hey Scientist,

tanx for the reply!
bass enhancer...sure scary, undoubtfully..i mean, u want your monitors to be as flat as possible..i guess it says a lot about edirol..i pretty much cut this out by now..

unfortunately i cant try out any :/
i live in europe, portugal to be precise, stores dont have many things in stock safe for PA's and shitty guitars, or really good but reaLLY ugly ones. in here, if u order, u have to buy it :/

i can probably score a good deal on krks...but still i really didnt wanna spend too much.

i will stick with active speakers. tanx for the advice!

hey noiseman

tanx for the sugestions...im consireding the maudio line as well..i will look into the samson resolvs..

my intention was not needing a sub, thats why my eyes kind of filled with smoke when i looked at those edirols...but i know they're probably crap.

u guys think maudio bx4" are just way too small to get anything decent out of it?

tanx!

If you get the Edirols, don't expect much and get the non 'digital' version because it's a gimmick you don't need and adds extra cost on.
