What do you use to record your drums?

I was just wondering what you guys use to record your drums. People tell me I'd need a preamp if i got a full set of drum mics, but i hear they're very expensive. And they say u can skrew up the sound if you just use XLR-to-1/4 cables for the mics. Input would be helpful and appreciated! I'm in a very dicisive bind right now, so anything would be of help!

Thanks!

For preamps, HHB Radius 5 for kick, a Radius 10 for toms and overheads, an Envoice MindPrint for the snare. In the kick(s) I have a couple of D-112's. Snare either an MD-441, a C-1000 or a SM-57. Rack toms I like the C-1000's or 57's. Floor tom, a C-3000 or a 57. Overheads, I REALLY like Earthworks SR-71's or KM-184's. The Octavas are pretty cool too (MK-012's). I think I like the omni caps over the cardiods for overheads. I put a Groove Tubes AM-52 out in front of the kit sometimes.
