ADAT sync cable?
Can I use any dual male 9-pin cable (like from a computer store) or does it have to be an Alesis-made cable?

It doesn't have to be Alesis-made, but it has to be shielded and grounded... the ones in the computer stores are neither shielded nor grounded.
