how best to make SACD-quality recordings?

I bought a 16-bit, 44.1kHz multitracker (a Fostex VF-160) a year ago and naturally only after the fact read about higher-quality 24-bit, 96+kHz multitrackers and formats (SACD and DVD-Audio).

Is it possible for a home recording enthusiast to burn SACDs? (Probably not due at least to the preferable CD/SACD 5.1 hybrid format.) Or would one have to settle for 5.1 DVD-Audio? Can either format be made with a computer DVD burner? Is DVD-Audio compressed/uncompressed?

I take it its probably best to upgrade to a *dedicated* computer-based recording setup for dealing with higher-end formats. What would you recommend for recording software? Protools? Would Nuendo do the job?

I really don't want to sonically limit my pieces and would like any pushes in the right direction regarding recording for these superior mediums.

Thanks in advance,

Daryle

SACD really can't be done with home studio equipment let alone most studio equipment. No one really records directly into an SACD format...it's usually done at a really high sample rate (192ish) and then converted....or done in analog and then converted somewhere else at a place that can do it. Same with the bit depth. There is no software program on the market that I know of to record at 2,822,400Hz, 1 bit.

If you'd like a dispute on whether SACD is even important to consider...and if you're interested in the math and can understand it, read this paper:
