Question BR-8 and other cosmic mysteries

Here's a question for a true techincal guru...

Is it possible to replace the Zip 100 drive in the BR-8 recorder with another device (such as an internal HD, or an ORB drive)? I'm considering purchasing the recorder but I would also need to purchase a Zip drive for my Mac in order to get the sound files from the recorder to my Burner. (I know what some of you are thinking... but I can't go directly from the sound outputs of the board into my computer... it's an old computer and it can't process data that quickly).

I own an external ORB drive which is currently hooked up to my Mac. I want to know if I can swap out the internal ZIP drive in the BR-8 for an internal ORB drive. An obvious benefit of this would be the increase in storage capacity (2.2 Gig vs. a mere 100 MB). Unfortunately, this question did not appear on BOSS's FAQ's so I am hoping that someone out there has either tried it, or knows if it can be done. If anyone knows if this is possible, please let me know the connection configuration as well (is it IDE or SCSI)? If it is impossible, tell me now so I can get on with the rest of my life. =)

I'm considering the possibility of picking up one of these nifty little machines, but I want some reality talked into me. I'm a solo artist who wants to do some digital multi-tracking. I'm quite the novice when it comes to digital recording, but I'm hoping to make some CD's that are marketable. Should I purchase the BR-8, or will I have to sell my vital organs to buy a recorder that's worth its salt? What do you recommend that I do. Here are the components I already own:

A Crest Audio sound board (not digital by any means) with 8 channels (mic and 1/4")

A computer that's just fast enough to display 256 colors and burn CD's... at the same time! (Computer mixing or recording is out of the question).

An 8 channel powered amplifier and pleanty of quality speakers.

Every instrument I would need to record (Bass, guitar, Acoustic Drum set, MIDI-capable Keyboard, vocals...can you recommend a decent microphone?)

I want to be able to mulit-track a song (performing the vocals and playing all the instruments myself) and then cut my own CD. Am I right in thinking that the BR-8 will work for me?

Thumbs down

You would be better off with another recorder. Roland just released the VS-840GX, an 8 track (~$900), which has COSM modeling,8 track simultaneous recording and a 250 MB ZIP. If you want a decent sounding, you can't hedge on equipment. I also saw that Sam Ash has the VS-840EX recorder marked down to $799. I really enjoy my BR-8, it's just what I need to compose songs. I take my songs back to the band to give them an ideal of how I want the song's bass, tempo, etc played. All the songs I wrote for our next CD have been composed using the BR-8.

I think 72fender is right...

It would be so complicated, and all the previous Roland models have a proprietary software.

If you want a hard drive, you need an 880 or 890
