As far as I can see they're quite rare and expensive. I see an Otari MX7800 on ebay in the US, it's around 1200 pounds. Shipping will probably be the same

You could find a 16-track MTR-90 or something and convert it down to 8 tracks by changing the heads. You see the 1" heads on ebay every now and then.
It's going to be expensive but parts will be readily available.

When it comes to 'budget' or 'portable' 1" recorders there seem to be basically two choices: The Brenell, which only seems to appear on e-bay when the stars are aligned, and the Soundcraft 380 which is also rare.

How you get parts for either of these machines is an open question.

analogelectric is on a distinguished road
http://www.jrfmagnetics.com/

It's out of New Jersey, USA but bar-none the best especially if you a second-hand question regarding different heads for any given machine they take care of; plus they do trade-in discounts. I've had my head relapped by them many times over the last 8 years and they're the only people I'd trust.

If anyone's still interested, here is a Studer A80 in 1" 8-track configuration.

Nice machine but it seems to be in need of a healthy amount of TLC!

Seller is also shy on any details!

Here's the same deck with a bit more light on the image to show the dust and rust.

Cheers!
