Rudiments

Well, Ive been playing self taught for 6 months now. I can read basic drum music, but the problem is that I don't know the rudiments. DOes anyone have any suggestions for any books or tapes I can learn them from?

When I was in drum & bugle corps we had to learn every paradiddle and flam combination known to man, plus every drag, diddle, ratamacue, open roll, stroke roll, etc. at the time. I don't practice them like I used to.

They have since invented new ones I have yet to learn.

Just out of curiosity, how many of those hundreds of rudiments do you still use regularly?

Hard to say. I think the effect is had is that I can play whatever phrase I want (mostly) without having to think about it. Kind of like doing katas in a martial art. Its not that you use the kata in a fight, it just trains your body to react to a situation.

Paradiddles and double strokes can be killer in tom combinations. You can also do accents without interrupting the beat. Its endless when soloing. You should also try rudiments with your feet.

There are kit "rudiments" as well, not just the hand to hand stuff but hand-foot-hand cominations. That's what I really should be working on.

Their's 40 basic rudiments then tons of hybrids. I still have no idea how some play some of these hybrids. They must have 3 hands or something!

There's a new one the kids I help at my daughters high school told me about called "Cheezes". I'm in the process of learning this one. It's HARD!!
