Gift Mic

I want to get a mic as a gift for my GF who is a conceptual artist. She does a lot of sound pieces, recording sound effects and ambient noise. I was thinking about an omni mic- below $200, preferably a dynamic or a condenser that can run off a battery. Also something small would be nice. any suggestions?

The audio-technica atm-10a operates on battery and phantom power and comes with a windscreen. These can be had quite cheap on ebay from time to time.

For dynamics have a look at the ev 635a, beyer m58.

by conceptual artist do you mean the kind of crackpot that records birds chirping and garbage trucks and calls it art or another kind of crackpot?

What about the kind of crackpot that puts meat on a bed and calls it art. That's not art. That's meat.

Now the guy who dyed an entire iceburg red, I'll call that art because it's VISUALLY APPEALING. There's more to art than just making a statement.

A statement without skill is punk music!

This will probably be the first and last time I recommend the AKG C1000s for anything.

I'd suggest an ElectroVoice 635A omni dynamic... it's very accurate, and nearly bullet-proof. They are most commonly used for news gathering, but they work really well for music and non-musical sound collecting. They can be had for less than $100.

lemerlisP is on a distinguished road
go for sony's pro model stereo condenser - the ECM-MS957. $200 bucks at minidisco.com. i've used their ECM-MS907 model for a ton of my "soundfield" work and have been very happy with it. get her a minidisk recorder too. can't beat the combo for cheap songbird captures.

The AKG C1000s has a 9v battery compartment so you don't need phantom power.
