symetrix 528,can u use de-esser and comp at same time?

mhhh, weird thing i just read,
is it true that you can't use the compressor and de-essor of the symetrix 528 at the same time?

if not? why on earth would they do that?

and whats the difference between the original and E model?
only a little layout change?

thanks,

earworm

No, you can use both of them together. It might not be true with the newer E unit, but I don't know. It's know it is with the older one.

Here's manuals for both:

The E version http://www.symetrixaudio.com/index.p...e=S&Product=20

The 528

By the way, where'd you read that crap?

hi man,
checked my pm,
tomorrow a guy is coming over to buy one of my sm57's
the day after a guy will buy a headphone set,
i'm still waiting for the money of my old behringer mx602

this week i got all the money for it !

but now,
i read something short about a symetrix upgrade,
on that site its about $130

but what does it do? give it a new mic preamp or something?
don't know anything about it...
is it worth the money..no first... WHAT is it?!

and what are the rumours about the old version is better than the E version?
the old is can't be repaired anymore by the company,
stopped selling in 1995 or what is it,
its rather old, doesn't it hiss and stuff?

just wondering before i pay....
cheers;

earworm who just went to the docter and now my right ear is FIXED!!
i hear in stereo again

whoeaaa

I don't know all the exact changes they made to them. I guess it's probably somewhere in that documentation. The E version DOES use an inferior preamp chip (ssm2017), as opposed to the cleaner, better-performing one in the 528 (ssm2015 -- discontinued). I got that from Chessrock here.

the Audio Upgrades service is this: "typical modifications include replace op-amps, E.Q. caps, coupling caps, direct-couple audio path, install feedback caps and more."

I'm thinking that it's not the case... nothing that I saw in a quick thumb through the manual points to this limitation... however, if it is in fact not possible to use the de-essor and compressor at the same time it would probably be due to the the de-essor circuitry working off an internal freq-dependent side-chain to the compressor. Before dedicated de-essors, that how this function was performed... with an eq side-chained off of a compressor
